Announcing Collate 1.6
Collate delivers new capabilities for automated governance and data observability with the latest 1.6 release for its managed OpenMetadata service. A key milestone is the new governance framework, which enables a new roadmap of capabilities, starting with glossary approval and data certification workflows designed for busy data governance teams needing to accelerate processes with automation and agentic AI. New data observability dashboards provide vendor-agnostic visibility into the performance of your data teams across your entire data estate. We’ve introduced Entity Relationship Diagrams to visualize database schemas and understand table connections through an intuitive UI editor. Other new capabilities include improved Custom Data Insights Dashboards and a Slack Application, as well as new OpenMetadata 1.6 features like Metric as an Entity, Search RBAC, Alert Debuggability, new connectors, and more.
Data governance automation for increased productivity
Collate has long helped data governance teams with capabilities like automated PII classification, a business glossary for standardized definitions, a knowledge center for institutional knowledge, and more.
We’ve found that data governance teams often manage sprawling and growing data estates with limited resources. Our Metadata Automations launch received strong positive feedback from teams looking for increased automation for their governance controls. In partnership with our customers, we’ve built a new automated governance framework that streamlines a variety of governance workflows.
In this launch, we're releasing two new capabilities on this framework: Glossary Approval Workflows and Data Certification Workflows, with more capabilities to come in the future.
Streamline Data Governance with Automated Glossary Approval Workflows
Organizations often struggle with data governance due to rigid, pre-defined manual workflows. In Collate 1.6, Glossary Approval Workflows have been migrated to a new automated framework.
Now, you can create custom approval processes with specific conditions and rules and easily visualize them through intuitive workflow UI. You can also create smart approval processes for glossary terms with real-time state changes and task creation to save time and streamline work.
Automated Workflows for Bronze, Silver, & Gold Data Certification
Collate 1.6 also leverages the new framework for a new Data Certification Workflow, allowing you to define your organization's rules to certify your data as Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Certified assets are a great way to help users discover the right data and inform them which data has been properly curated.
A roadmap for increased automation and intelligence
Our vision is to build additional automated workflows on this framework and expand it to allow our users to create their own Custom Governance Workflows. We want to enable data teams to implement and automate data governance processes that perfectly fit your organization, promoting data quality and compliance.
Additionally, this is just a starting step to a larger vision of bringing together human data teams and agentic AI to transform modern data culture and practices.
Governing a Healthy Data Platform with Data Observability Dashboards
Data leaders across different teams need visibility into the quality and health of the data across the data estate. Collate has been a strong pillar for data quality implementations, with its ability to create no-code tests from the UI, native observability alerts, and Incident Manager.
In 1.6, we’re introducing organization-wide observability dashboards that allow you to track overall data quality coverage trends and analyze incident response performance across your entire data estate while still being able to drill into per-table-level data quality insights for troubleshooting. Additionally, enhanced asset and lineage views help identify upstream root causes and enable proactive data quality management.
Visualizing Your Data with Entity Relationship (ER) Diagrams
Understanding complex database schemas can be challenging without clear visualizations. Collate 1.6 introduces ER diagrams as a new feature to enable you to:
Understand the big picture: Quickly see how tables are connected to other tables within your database based on constraints like primary and foreign keys.
Discover hidden connections: Navigate through your data assets, jumping across tables to uncover relationships and gain valuable insights.
Take control of your data map: Use the built-in UI editor to modify existing relationships or add new ones, ensuring your ER diagrams are always accurate and up-to-date.
Understand and manage your data better with ER diagrams to visualize how your database tables relate to each other.
Expanded Connector Ecosystem
Centralizing metadata across your data estate is essential for creating a single source of truth, and we bring new connectors in each release to continuously expand our coverage. In 1.6, we are releasing new connectors for a variety of services:
API Services: OpenAPI
Dashboard Services: Sigma and Power BI Report Server
Database Services: Exasol
Pipeline Services: Matillion, Azure Data Factory and Stitch
ML Services: Vertex AI
Additional Collate Improvements
Enhanced Data Insights Customer Dashboard Builder: A redesigned UI that simplifies creating custom insight dashboards
New Slack App Integration: Share and discover data assets directly within your Slack workspace through Collate's official Slack app
OpenMetadata 1.6 Improvements
Please read the OpenMetadata 1.6 blog post for additional details of the release feature included in the Collate 1.6 release of managed OpenMetadata, including:
Metric as an Entity: Dedicated metric management capabilities including documentation, formulas, and code with support for Python, Java, SQL, and LaTeX.
Search RBAC: Administrators can customize the user search experience so results are restricted to assets within their scope. Alternatively, they can enable users to have increased visibility to assets for wider discovery, while still enforcing access controls.
Asynchronous Export APIs: Enjoy increased efficiency when exporting and importing large datasets with new asynchronous APIs.
Faster Search Re-indexing: Experience significantly improved performance in search re-indexing, making data discovery even smoother.
Alert Debuggability: Allows users to test the destinations and see whenever the alert is triggered.
